Sunday morning on the balcony

 Squeezed in between the pots...

Piper

...we spent half the morning doing mundane gardening tasks: watering, tying tomatoes, squishing aphids, dead-heading spent blossoms, emptying the containers of bolted lettuce, sifting old soil and moving pots either to follow or avoid the sun, depending on the plants' preferences.

And we spent half the morning -- ok, more -- just observing:

Nasturtium, 'Cherries Jubilee'

Eggplant flower buds

Eggplant, 'Millionaire', flower buds

Teeny tiny cucumbers

Persian baby cucumbers, 'Green Fingers'

Cherry Tomatoes, 'Sungold', 'Sweetgold' or 'Supersweet'

If only tomato leaves were edible.  I do love the scent they release when you brush them with your fingertips.

Before Piper & before my camera, I did not take time to observe -- it was just work, work, work, and no play.

How did you enjoy your garden  -- and I hope you did -- this weekend? How do you make sure you take a well-deserved break, even for just a few minutes, from the work that is never done. Like me, do you find it hard to ignore the messy bits -- the parts of your garden that never appear in photos?

Tomato leaves and geranium leaves are among my favourite scents. I must confess now that yesterday I went out and bought two pots of tomatoes for my deck. Confess? Because they were already growing and I didn't have to do any work to get them. Somehow I feel one ought to put in some effort to be rewarded with veggies!

Oh Tess, I know you put lots of effort into other creative areas of your life so I think it's ok to streamline your gardening tasks. And don't worry, you'll be putting in plenty of effort watering and providing TLC.

Hello sweet-faced Piper!

Elaine - once again, we have crossed over with one another's comments. Most amusing. Your thoughts on gardening for pleasure as well as good eating have been seeping into mine over the last few days, and those sweet peas...almost as sweet as Piper! We have a large, very resilient geranium that lives at the ottom of the garden, but yours are something special.

Lovely postings, as always.

Apologies for my stuck keyboard - new computer arrives today - I meant to say 'nasturtiums' rather than 'geraniums' (for which I clearly cannot blame the keyboard) and 'bottom' for 'ottom'. Silly fingers.

Hi Lucy. No apologies needed. If I think just a little bit like you, well, I'm thrilled.

Nasturtiums as such undemanding plants & so cheery. I love them. But I wish the aphids didn't like them so much.
