small stone: january 10
Monday, January 10, 2011
(Encounters with the winter sun at mid-day.)
Cold-faced sun,
you're a sharp one,
quite brilliant, in fact.
You lay low,
then tease & dazzle
with brief appearances,
paving the path with frosty diamonds,
scattering gold coins among the stream's shadows.
Cold-hearted sun,
who gives no warmth --
you are precious to me.

Such lovely small stones in the last few days. Quiet, thoughtful and yet full to the brim with images, gorgeous words and beautiful pictures. And anything which can make you love January in your cold climate must be a remarkable experience. I've been pondering the differences between this small stone and our January Sydney sun, which could not be more different. I can quite see why on a cold, cold day those flashes of sunlight, even if they have no warmth, are precious indeed.
Hello, Kathryn. Thank you for your lovely, thoughtful comment. Reading it has been precious to me.
Since yesterday afternoon I haven't been able to stop thinking about Brisbane. And the irony of contributing small stones to a river -- well, I'd forgotten that rivers can be destructive as well as beautiful & life-sustaining.
My thoughts are with you & your fellow Australians.
