A homily from Emily
Sunday, January 23, 2011
OME keep the Sabbath going to church;
I keep it staying at home,
With a bobolink for a chorister,
And an orchard for a dome.Some keep the Sabbath in surplice;
I just wear my wings,
And instead of tolling the bell for church,
Our little sexton sings.God preaches,—a noted clergyman,—
And the sermon is never long;
So instead of getting to heaven at last,
I’m going all along!~ Emily Dickinson (1830–86). Source: Complete Poems. 1924.

I should have guessed this poem was written by Emily Dickinson. I just read another one that made me burst out laughing, read it aloud to my husband, and then have a long smile, nodding my head in agreement with her sentiment. I'll re-find it and post it for you to read and enjoy, too.
I was listening to a CBC radio feature on Emily Dickinson a couple of Sundays ago and stumbled upon this poem. I couldn't resist posting it as the timing was so perfect.
I'll put a link to the feature as soon as it's been uploaded. (I just checked & it's not on the CBC radio Sunday Edition past episodes page, yet.)
