Seed-sowing Saturday

Compost

Finished compost from the 2010 balcony garden's green & brown trimmings

I'll use this compost to enrich the soil for the seeds sown directly outdoors.

I heart Cubit's & Hazel ;-)

Here's my sowing list for this weekend:

Direct sow outdoors in containers:

Peas - 'Little Marvel' (w)
Radishes
- 'Plum Purple' (c), 'Pink Punch'(r), 'Easter Egg II' (r)
Kale - 'Lacinato' (w)
(I'll save the 'Red Velvet' lettuce in the photo for early April)

Sow indoors under grow-lights:

Eggplant -'Rosa Bianca' (c)
Pepper - 'Alma Paprika' (c)
Tomatoes - 'Chianti Rose' (r), 'Gold Nugget' Yellow Cherry (c), 'Red Robin' (m), 'Silvery Fir Tree' (p), 'Sophie's Choice' (p)

I use sterile seedling mix for all seeds sown indoors.

(Note: Abbreviations indicate sources of seeds – (c) Cubit's, (m) Meighan, (p) Populuxe Seed Bank, (r) Renee's Garden, (w) West Coast Seeds)

Well, I better get started before I get distracted (again) by faint sunshine & succumb to the lure of a nearby 'Whitcomb' cherry blossom tree -- yesterday the pink buds looked close to popping open.

What are your gardening activities for this first weekend in March?

We are in the process of getting more snow! But I did place an order for strawberries and fruit trees today. It will be a while before anything can be sowed outside, and I don't have any place to start seeds indoors right now. Love the photos--simple yet beautiful.

Hello, kateri. Oh, no, not more of the white stuff! Our deposit from last week has melted - I confess I didn't cope with it very well. I've lost all my prairie girl hardiness.

What a lovely order of berries & fruit you placed. I'll be visiting your blog in a few moments to view the lovely sights you photographed this past week. I think it will be a fine way to begin this Sunday morning.

Easter Egg is the best name for a radish! I hope your seeds grow well.

I agree, Arwen, it is a great name. Thank you for the sowing & growing well wishes.

What a wonderful selection of seeds and such a tidy work area. The daylight is increasing here but not fast enough so I'm excited to know how your grow lights work out! Are the tomato varieties you have chosen all cherry/small ones? I haven't tried growing big tomatoes yet because I'm put off by providing support for the heights they can reach.

p.s we haven't had any last minute snow here but have had a sudden return of the cold - I was very surprised to have to defrost the car this morning

Thank you, Sophie, but my real work area is not very tidy. I confess I "styled" the photographs.

Except for the 'Chianti Rose', which I'm going to grow in my mom's garden, all the tomatoes are determinate varieties. There's a couple more on the "possibilities" list I'm considering, too, including 'Glacier', 'Kootenai' & 'Stupice'.

As soon as the grow light system is finished, I'll photograph it & publish a descriptive post. Except for the lights, which are new, the components are bits & pieces I've collected over the years.

We are still experiencing winter-like temperatures here (yesterday snow was forecast for higher elevations) so I can't pretend to have a head-start on the garden. In fact, all I did this weekend was prep the pots with fresh soil and compost & set up the indoor seedling trays.

I hope you soon will see & feel signs of spring.
