Friday Fun with Food

Perhaps the seven wisest words ever uttered -- at least this century -- on how to eat:

I'm posting this later-than-usual in the day because my typing rate is about 10% of my normal. I'm using the "hunt-and-peck" keystroke method  due to a midweek kitchen accident.  Don't cringe or be concerned -- I still have all my digits. Let's just say I learned a hard and painful lesson that the concept of "slow" should extend to food preparation as well as eating.

Sorry you hurt yourself. I should be OK under that situation...I'm quite slow in the kitchen. Take care

I hope you are okay. I cut the tip of my left thumb off cutting artichokes a number of years ago, far enough down to affect the nerves. So now my thumb is either in pain or numbed, it's weird. My mother (who really is a lovely woman) said "serves you right for drinking martinis while you cook" and the truly sad part is that I hadn't even had a sip of anything. It was a full 8 weeks before I could use my thumb again. No piano practicing for me! Hope it's nothing like that. p.s. I've really been enjoying your interview posts. Great sounding women, I'll check out their blogs

Thank you for your concern, Gillian and Kelly. I'm touched. I guess I better confess the whole story so no one worries.

On Wednesday at midday, I was preparing bones for my Westie. (His diet will be the topic of a future post.) For the past three years, I've been giving him free-range buffalo femur bones from which I remove the marrow, fat and gristle. He gnaws on them (always supervised by me) which cleans his teeth and keeps his breath fresh.

Well, I had done this so many times and today was in more of a hurry than usual and my mind was elsewhere -- not on the task at hand or even in the kitchen. The knife slipped...and you can guess what it contacted.

Fortunately, I live only a block away from the Emergency Department so I was able to walk myself there for some stitches to my thumb and excellent care overall. Kudos to VGH Emergency staff and Plastic Surgery residents. They were wonderfully comforting and highly competent.

Unfortunately, though, I may have severed a digital nerve and don't have any sensation on the left side of my left thumb. I may need to have surgery within a week or two. I'm just grateful for how it all turned out as the outcome could have been so much worse.
