Where I've been, where I'm going

Katsura Leaves

Katsura leaves after morning rain

Perhaps only I've noticed my month-long absence from The Dietitian's Journal but I think I should write a quick explanation.

This past September I've been on a stay-at-home-vacation in Vancouver and the neighbouring Fraser Valley. Highlights: Plenty of walking, reading, gardening and taking a course that exercised my right brain and under-developed creativity muscles. Lowlight: Ten days ago a family member sustained a severe calcaneal fracture.

So even on vacation I've been in full dietitian role, ensuring my family member consumes a high-protein, high-energy, calcium-rich diet supplemented with vitamin D everyday.  I've also started reviewing the current evidence-based literature on nutrition to support bone healing and will be sharing the best resources here in future blog posts.

See you again next week when I return to work and a more regular blogging schedule.

You've been missed online Elaine. In all the various places I chat with you. Best wishes to your mum with her fracture and recovery.

Selfishly I'm looking forward to the fruits of your bone health research. Although a shame it has to be under these circumstances.

And the light in that bottom photo - is outstandingly gorgeous.

Best wishes to you dearie.

Thanks for your comment, Kathryn. You've just boosted my spirits to the hilltop where I soon hope to be walking with my Mom again, in about 3 months, at the most.

Yes, I'm highly motivated to learn more about nutrients to boost bone healing, but oh my, what a sorry reason.

Dear readers: Here are four safety tips when walking down stairs, especially if lighting is poor or steps are steep and/or narrow --
#1) Gather your composure if you are upset
#2) Don't multi-task
#3) Hold onto the hand-rail
#4) Watch out for "false bottoms" - ie., a long landing before other steps down.

(I hasten to add the fall was not my Mom's fault -- there were other, contributing factors. However, these are safety precautions about which I'm now more mindful.)

Hi Elaine!
Just wanted to add that yes, you were missed! I get a chance about once a week or so to check out my favorite blogs.. and I wondered what you have been up to! I am very sorry to hear about the unfortunate mishap in your family. I do hope they are healing well. Also wanted to let you know I have shared your website with dieitian friends and colleagues, and I frequently use it to help me in my search for some information or topics I am interested in. Looking forward to the new information on bone health you will be posting! Part of my position at the hosptial where I work is the orthopedic surgery unit, so any new or refresher info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks again. Glad to see you back. Heidi

Thanks for your kind words, Heidi. Yes, my Mom is healing slowly. She's eating very well -- her diet gets the dietitian's stamp of approval.

I'll share a reference list soon. I'm reading an excellent review article today: http://mrw.interscience.wiley.com/cochrane/clsysrev/articles/CD000227/frame.html
