Prizes in the Greens & Berries Nutrition Month Contest

To celebrate the last day of Nutrition Month and the first day of my Spring vacation, I'm running a small, short contest. Here are the details:

  1. The contest is open to all blog readers. However, because of mailing costs, I will be offering different prizes for North America and "the rest of the world."
  2. At midnight tonight (March 31st), By 0900 hrs (PDT) April 1st, I will be posting 6-8 questions based on Nutrition Month posts plus one "knowledge-testing" question about a food event not previously mentioned on this blog. (Sorry for the delay -- I will post the questions ASAP but probably not by midnight tonight.)
  3. The contest will run for two days only, April 1st and 2nd, 2008.
  4. During the contest period, readers submitting correct answers for all questions  will be eligible for the prizes.
  5. On April 3rd, I will start drawing names (email addresses) from all correct (eligible) entries.
  6.  The first  North American reader's name drawn will receive the Dietitians of Canada cookbook in the picture above. (The title is hidden because it's the answer to one of the contest questions).  Don't worry, I'm not passing on a sauce-stained book from my shelf;  this copy is brand-new, never-been-used. It's not the most recent Dietitians of Canada cookbook, but it's my favourite.
  7. The first reader from outside North America will receive a collection of food-themed art cards by Vancouver photographers and artists. (I'm sorry I can't send you a cookbook but to keep shipping costs reasonable, I had to choose something lighter in weight.) You can view sample cards in the photo above.
So watch for the not-too-difficult questions coming in the next post.

Friday Fun with Food

Perhaps the seven wisest words ever uttered -- at least this century -- on how to eat:

Credits:  Image generated using Talk Soup!  Thank you to Janine of  the UPPERCASE journal for posting about this fun typography tool.

I'm posting this later-than-usual in the day because my typing rate is about 10% of my normal. I'm using the "hunt-and-peck" keystroke method  due to a midweek kitchen accident.  Don't cringe or be concerned -- I still have all my digits. Let's just say I learned a hard and painful lesson that the concept of "slow" should extend to food preparation as well as eating.

Nutrition Month Advice (?) from the 19th Century

Thecareofhealth.jpg

from the Universal Health Instructor, published in 1884

"Diet. This should be plain and wholesome, and of a mixed character. It should also be moderate as to quantity, and regular, allowing neither too long nor too short intervals between meals."

Some health maxims [today we would probably call them Nutrition Month tips]:

  1. The almost universal cause of dyspepsia is eating too fast, too often and too much.
  2. Sameness of food is a great drawback to health, for nature craves a variety of elements.
  3. Never eat when you are not hungry, nor drink when you are not thirsty; it imposes on nature.
  4.  The three great elementary principles of every healthy community as well as of individuals are pure air, perfect cleanliness and well-cooked food.
  5. Eat regularly...Spend one or two hours in cheery outdoor activities.
  6. By using water in abundance to keep clean, taking exercise in moderation to keep the blood pure, and having a regular diet to sustain and strengthen, a man may maintain good health to the utmost limit of fourscore.
  7. In recovering from any sickness...eat moderately and at regular intervals, of plain, nourishing food.
