Beautiful preserves...& a statement

Display of home-canned food, circa 1941-45, Library of Congress [No known restrictions on publication]

I'd like to go on record: My blog, like these preserves, is a GMO-free zone.

For now (but more to come soon), I will list only one authoritative source that has shaped my opinion and strengthened my convictions; here's one of David Suzuki's recent statements: More science needed on effects of genetically modifying food crops. Also on one of the David Suzuki Foundation blogs, Thought for food: Organic farming is good for you and the planet.

Organic Food: An Information Sampler

In case you're curious about the project I devoted so much of my life to in April, I decided to upload and share it here, though I know a blog is not the ideal delivery method for a talk with Powerpoint slides. To compensate a bit, I've included my speaker's notes, rough as they are. To read them, put your mouse on the yellow icon at the top left of each slide. Unfortunately, the web links don't work in this PDF version so you will have to cut and paste the URLs into your browser.

Working on this project was a labour of .... well, not quite love, though I did enjoy reading and writing about the topic. Almost as much as gardening. I did not, however, enjoy compressing everything I learned and deemed "need-to-know" into a 15 minute talk. That was hard. In fact, impossible. So I gave the audience extra material for self-directed discovery and learning. Hence, the extensive References & Resources handout I shared in the previous post.

I'm excited about the opportunities and challenges, and am motivated to keep learning more on how I, as dietitian, gardener, and community member, can contribute to a sustainable, organic food system.  How about you? What challenges and opportunities do you embrace as your own?

Organic Food: An Information Sampler

 Organic Sampler

Dear Faithful Readers:

Thanks for returning to Greens & Berries after my month-long blogging break. I tend to underestimate the time a project will need and overestimate the "free time" I think I'll have to complete it. I also haven't developed the skill or mind-set of being able to work on more than one "big thing" at a time.

And a month of gathering resources on organic agriculture, skimming all of them, reading quite a few in depth and then preparing material for a brief presentation, I'm completely out of thoughts & words. At least that's how I feel today.

But beginning next week, I plan to share excerpts from the presentation, Organic Food: An Information Sampler. For now, I thought you might be interested in the references & resources I've discovered. I've compiled them into a PDF document with Web links you can download.
